FINANCIAL
AID RESOURCES FOR BLACK
STUDENTS IN AMERICA
Black
Scholarship and Minority
Scholarship Guide
The avenues for post
secondary opportunities
exist for minorities but
it does takes effort.
Many universities and
colleges offer Black
Americans financial aid
as well as grants and
scholarships.
However, many students
are unaware of these
opportunities and do not
know how to access them
and the prerequisites
and paperwork involved
in attaining these
educational grants and
funds.
Organization such as the
NAACP and the United
Negro College Fund have
devoted resources.
Additionally,
there are many local
institutions and
associations that
provide scholarships and
aid to African
Americans. This is
not an exhaustive list
but it will assist the
student or parent on
their journey to find
financial support for
their education.
The
United Negro College
Fund
Historically,
the UNCF has assisted
nearly 500,000 African
American students with
financial assistance
with historically black
colleges and
universities in the
United States.The UNCF
is affiliated with 39
public and private
colleges.
Thurgood
Marshall College Fund
The
Thurgood Marshall
College Fund was
established to help
students wishing to
attend one of the 38
historically black
public colleges and
universities. Currently,
the non-government
organization provides
tuition assistance for
students wishing to
attend 54 colleges and
universities in the
United States.
Additionally, the
organization partners
with other major
corporations such as
Coca-Cola and Siemens.
The average tuition
scholarships for
recipients of aid
awarded by the
organization is $2,200
per semester to
historically black
public colleges and
universities. One of the
requirements to
receiving financial
assistance is that the
prospective applicant
must attain a 3.0 grade
point average or higher,
must have a
recommendation from an
attended high school,
and must show that there
is a financial need.
The
Thurgood Marshall
College Fund is also a
good resource for other
scholarship
opportunities available
from other institutitons.
NAACP
The NAACP provides
minority students with
financial assistance for
colleges and
universities.
There are five
categories of
scholarships offered by
the NAACP: Earl G.
Graves Scholarship,
Agnes Jones Jackson
Scholarship, Lillian
& Samuel Sutton
Education Scholarship,
Roy Wilkins Scholarship,
and the Hubertus W. V.
Wellems Scholarship For
Male Students. These
African-American student
financial aid and scholarship
programs are
differentiated by the
amount of money they
grant.
The
requirements to qualify
for the NAACP
scholarship
opportunities are the
following:
- A
minimum GPA of 2.5
for undergrads and a
3.0 GPA for graduate
students.
- Some
of the scholarships
that NAACP offers
require applicants
to be members of the
association, and
have specific
guidelines to
demonstrate
financial need.
